| i searched for the lyrics to "challengers" by the new pornographers. we've spent nights listening to the lyrics, and they rip my heart out every time. i stare at you as you sit on the floor, the only light illuminating us the earth as it rotates on the lcd screen. it's the new romanticism of the era. technology with heart strings. glow of the earth as the stars beckon us on with words as they are carried with music. i found the lyrics, describing the song as new love found unexpectedly. i thought it might be that, but my uncertainty was amplified by my inability to hear lyrics properly sometimes. i'm the one who hears a song and sings it wrong. but it was right, and though it's about new love. it's about you and i. the unexpected you and i, found through the nuances of life as we know it. how technology has founded itself in our life. new online dating, and how we grapple with relationships the same as so many before us. but i can't help but think that our relationship isn't founded in the bytes and pixels that inundate our lives. whether it's the electric blue of the earth as it rotates on the 42" screen or your face as it sleeps at night. it's still ageless. and today i have these lyrics in my head as your face rotates in and out of it too. there's no point to my words, just that you are as random as life can be. but my heart still finds you every day. |
