When I saw the ocean I knew That today I would be able to see the fish. I stood knee deep and a school of fifty or more approached With the coordinated movement of birds. They paused for the briefest second to inspect my legs, Their gilded bodies flashing in the sun Like so many sterling coins. Then they darted away, vanishing instantly as if into woods. And so it is with our love. I see it - just long enough to recognize its beauty But not long enough to know its details And then it's gone, leaving me to wander Whether I had really even seen it at all Or if it were merely a shadow play Of water against sand. |
