"Be free," he said to the bird And he gently unlatched the door Keeping her safe From the outside world But she sat quietly perched Cocking her head to the side Not quite understanding The words the man had said "Be free," he said again He leaned down to her cage Hoping she would somehow comprehend She hopped on her perch To the sound of his voice And stayed where she was safe instead "Be free," he repeated And he reached inside Discarding her food To lure her out from within "Be free," he said nearly crying He walked away this time Forgetting to remove the chain He had placed around her leg |
