If only you knew

I am just a bird in a cage waiting to flee
each day you come to love and hold
Each time you fear I might runaway
So you take a feather, so I might stay
If only you knew, if you would let me fly
I would stay until the end of time

I pick up my feathers and pray to God
that he will show me how to mend them back on
The more you take my feathers from me
The more I want to run and flee
Its not you I really want to flee
Its the pain of feathers being ripped
              off the flesh of me
If only you knew, if you would let me fly
I would stay until the end of time

Someday I hope you will see
How little by little you are destroying me
If this continues and you take all my feathers from me
We shall both surely die in a sensless sea
If only you knew, if you would let me fly
I would stay until the end of time

Now I see the day has come
and neither of us have won
It is time for me to pick up my feathers and fly
The pain and sorrow is great, but I will not cry
If only you knew, If you would have let me fly
I would have stayed until the end of time
