The Afterglow

I stare blankly out a window
   watching scenery toll by.
You ask if I mind your smoking.
I tell you that it's fine.

A smile of satisfaction
   rests upon your face.
   And a smile hiding guilt
   takes my real smile's place.

You talk of stupid, petty things
as I sip my diet coke.
   And somewhere with another man
the heart I lost is broke.

A corny country son still plays
   and you blankly sing along.
I'm wondering if you even know
that what we did was wrong.

As your smoke curls to my nose
   sickness overcomes my mind.
I swallow it down and it remains
   long after we've said goodbye.

I stare blankly at a paper now
   Finally realizing why.
It isn't love or lust, my dear.
I'm just using you to hide.
