Butterfly

Butterfly

Anticipation sends a shiver down my spine
Like a butterfly about to break free of its cocoon.
I can hardly wait to test these new wings
No longer frightened by the fickle winds of change.

Allow me to revel in this solo flight
For it will swiftly carry me to you.
So honey, be patient with me
I'll be well worth the wait.

I can feel sweet Destiny beckoning me
And I know our paths will soon cross.
Still, the Fates say timing is everything
And tell me I'm not ready yet.

Wisdom whispers in my ear
Enjoy this time that's for you and you alone
Yet, impatience mutters - don't waste time
For it will soon waste you.

Then - I hear her
A voice so like my own, only stronger and wiser.
In wonder I listen to the seed of my soul
As she blossoms like a flower under the sun's warm rays.

I can almost see glimpses
Of the woman I am soon to become.
Suddenly I am in no hurry
To follow Destiny's path.

I am intrigued by this new person
So foreign, yet so familiar.
In awe I watch her wave a fond farewell to her predecessor,
The lost, frustrated girl of years past I'd grown to know so well.

Gone is the helpless sacrificial lamb
Lain broken and beaten at Hell's door.
So you see baby, give me time to regain my strength
For only then will I have the power to truly give love.
