I Meant Forever

When you said "I love you"
The words descended on wings
Fit for the angel Gabriel
And wrapped around me with your arms
Taking us above the petty world
Into a place of love and grace
Our fragile hearts fortressed from harm
In a pool of Heaven's rays
But it could not outshine
The illumination of our elated hearts

When I said "I love you"
The words poured from my tender lips
As pure and true as
Wine aged with time and fit for gods
They spilled on your anticipating ears
And you drank them in
Their delicious favor satiating your thirst
As we savored the taste of bliss
Though it could not compare
To the flavor of you

When you said "I'm leaving"
My heart fell from out sacred place
And you watched with sobered eyes
As I shattered into shards of pain
Left me to fumble for each particle
Of my endurably drunken heart
Without a Holy light to guide
Through a cold world of hate
But I'm still stumbling
Parched and disjointed

But when I said "I love you"
There was another word
Creeping between the silence
And our own intoxicated breathing
Quietly joining two blessed hearts
In a pool of sacred light
The word meant something more
Than the liquored phrase I spilled
Because when I said "I love you"
I meant forever
