Woman Weeping

Why do women weep indoors?
What secrets do they hide on the draped tables
and notes tucked forlornly in dusty books?

Why not weep out in the sunshine
where all will know how to measure grief
against a sunbeam?

Why do they weep at all?
Now that is really the secret.

Do they weep for children and lovers
in the ideals of sentiment-- perhaps even take
those tears for a walk among the trees?

Or do they weep for thwarted dreams,
howling at the walls they so carefully built
to clothe their pain-- dressing in their finest
and sitting elegantly under lamplight?
