In Your Absence

The clock has a peculiar way around you,
bending itself
in strange shapes
to suit it's own fancy.
It whizzes past me
at double time when we are together---
talking or touching------
and three hours have passed in a twinkle.
But when you are elsewhere,
attending to your life or heart
it drags on and out
two hours can be
a ruddy eternity
cold
dank
heartless.
So I must choose between
time that isn't
and the endless seconds
that lack
you to make them real.
