She Swims Alone

For aeons they were inseparable
Two who truly had become one
In every sense of the perfect union
That was ordained from their very first touch.

His heart was her heart
And her laughter set his world aglow
Much like the algae found in the deepest trenches
Shone with eerie ambience seen throughout watery Atlantis's kingdom.

And when they made love
As light ebbed from the naked depths each day,
They say the great blue whales would sing
As sacred sound added to the music of their love.
And the shrimp and starfish would dance
With no regard at all to the nets of death that swooped from above.

But like all things created by an indifferent God
Time brought change
As the world moved on in a new direction
And this moment had arrived much too soon
For him
For her
Indeed for all creatures
Who secretly believed in the power of love
To conquer all
To win out in the end.

And maybe she had only herself to blame
For some secret sin
That threw the universe out of balance
Requiring a life
To restore creation.

And this was her secret hope
Because only a soul as pure and good as his
Would be taken for just such a task
And only such a thought allowed her to keep breathing such hard water.

Because to breathe she must swim
And now
Forever
When she would smim, she would swim alone.
