Extra piece

It's funny
there's a metaphor for everything.
I had this toy once.
It was my life.
You could change it from
a walkman
to this robot.
Something ordinary
to magical.
To figure it out.
I took it apart.
I put it back together again.
And there was this extra piece.
I couldn't fit it back in there.
No matter how hard I tried.
I spent days.
Weeks.
Months.

I never got that part back in.
And it worked.
From a walkman
to this robot.
But.
There was no more magic.

I wish I could figure out
how she fit in my life.
I miss that magic.
But.
I'm old enough to know that
sometimes you have to
Let it stay
sort of
broken.

She's the extra piece.
That's not extra.
