Her Voice On The Line
I knew she existed of course.
Knew she was part of your life----
but that phone number
had only ever been
a lifeline to you.
I dialed, humming
then Crash
Burn
Bouncy
to empty
in no time flat.
I almost dialed again---
but reality struck.
Strange----
knowing her voice
never having met her.
It is unequal-----
i know a lot about her---
but she doesn't know I exist
doesn't know
we have you in common.
This deception thing is new to me,
and frankly I don't like the taste---
don't like how I felt
stabbing the disconnect
before she could hear my voice,
afraid one small sound
would betray you---
and force you to choose
before I am ready
to risk losing you
to a roll at the gaming table
where love is holding all the chips.
