A Trip To The Market

I walked to the market
With a light step and
Even lighter heart
And the little blue haired beauty noticed
As she weighed the asparagus
“My, young man what a beautiful smile.”
And with a twinkle and laugh
I give her a wink and blow her a kiss as I turn away.

“Wait, I want you to have something.” She says
With a twinkle of her own.
And wiping her tiny wrinkled hands on clothe
She opens a standing cooler
And extracts a single red rose
“I was young once,
And turned many a head in my day, yes sir.”
“But only one thing brings the look I see in your eyes.”
“And I remember the dance well, young man.”

“When you give her this
Along with your kiss.”
“Remember to keep your eyes open young man.”
“That she may see those stars in your eyes
And know to hold you tight
Because time flies
And you’re only young once lad”
“But you can feel young forever
If you can hold your love sacred
And tell her how you feel every single day.”

And then she laughed and leaned in
And kissed me like she was 20 again
Instead of 70
And I have to tell ya’
A sweeter kiss has never crossed these lips
As my secret revealed
At the corner grocery
Just this day
So I must hurry now
I have things to say you see
Sweet things, mushy things
But true things, that will keep me young forever.
