I Should Be Thanking You

I should actually be thanking you
for making sure
there are no embers,
that I can make the next move
as free of regret
as is possible
for a heart that once loved.
You say you love---
cruel joke---how dare you?
You took what I gave,
smothered it with a pillow,
stabbed it to death
ate it's heart
and then had the stone cajones
to ask me why I was unhappy?
One of us hasn't been paying
a hell of a lot of attention---
but that's okay.
You are so certain
that you are right
correct
and blameless
that I wish you the comfort of it all.
You wanted to make sure
that when i turned my back on you
there would be no doubt,
nothing to lure me back
after the last good memory
was bled dry to parched
by the anger in your voice
or heart.
I should be thanking you----
you made the unthinkable
the only option I had left.

Have a nice life.
Oh--and don't write.
