the fringe of apathy

a two-bit liar stole her name
his worth was halfed
worked in new math
was negative
details escape how it transpired
lost in dots and dashes
mascara caked on already thick eyelashes
smoke signals interrupted by a hellfire blast
a cracked bottle and a drowned message from the past
running lines
mascara, thick and bleeding
lip liner on a downhill plea
napkin at a diner
dinner served for one
finger inserted in a bond
she blames it on upbringing
and the fact that she is blonde
her roots are sort of reddish
but she never lets that on
not to anyone
finger inserted in a bowl of mashed potatoes
minus gravy
she still stirs
her concscience tells her that there's nothing wrong with her
but her doctor's taking notes
prescribing antidotes
inserting his finger in her trust
twisting his ring around his own
biting his lip while she's confiding
wondering when his wife gets home
just to entertain the thought
because he feels so alone
and his wife is on the rag
and his life has been a drag
he rationalizes everything
he runs his life by guilt
if it isn't really known
then it isn't really felt
he'd pin her ankles behind her head
if it wasn't on his grandma's quilt
the timer ends it all
the morals of the story
are returned by something hanging on the wall
some things only change because of the minutes they're allowed
inserting her finger in thin air
she watches the people duck
she stirs some fear in everyone
she no longer gives a fuck
