I wished for you

I wished for you
I listed out your qualities years ago-
      when you were an architect
      and I was a cheerleader.
When time and distance kept us
      oblivious of each other.
I said this,
     and this,
        and qua, qua, qua...
     ...and you you you...
                          ...but I didn't know.
How could I know that the very things I wanted
could be wrapped up in one such attractive
   (and easily spooked)package?
And how, also, was I to know that
           fate
         is a bitch
and timing is fierce and i am not
     the package
you are looking for?
                      too thin.
                      too independent.
                      too bad.
And so why, then, was I given the chance
             to know -
             to hope -
               for you?
Because we are pawns
And that which goes through everything
is playing dice                        with the universe-
and while you like jazz - you don't
     like mountain climbing-
and that is essential to my beat
                                ing heart.
