Homecoming

he's not coming home mama said
but i still wear my sunday best
why don't you go to bed daddy asked
but my forehead remains pressed agains the window pane
and the pain of your absence remains pressed against my heart

where's papa bear joshua asks
i smile and say he'll be here shortly
with sugary sweets and sugary kisses

the flowers have wilted
the casserole dishes have been returned
your mama's wearing yellow

and still i wait

you promised you'd come home and
you never made a promise you didn't keep.

everyone in deanburg thinks i'm crazy
but that sad kind of crazy
mama tells 'em to give me time
but time is all i got

you're coming home
you're coming home
you're here

'cause every time the wind lifts my hair
i feel you kiss my neck

and everytime i walk in the rain
i feel your tears on my cheek

when the storms rage outside
(and inside)
i feel your arms wrap around me

your smile lights up little josh's face
and your scent still inhabits our closet
and i don't feel alone

and i'm crazy
in love

it's been eight years now.
