SCENE TWO EXT.-Day-Same pasture. Tansy, a plump 16-18 year old with a freckled face and blonde pigtail braids wearing blue jeans and a Billy the Kid t-shirt and red boots is riding a black horse across the pasture. She is riding toward Hopkin, who is sitting on the bench beneath the cherry tree eating cherries and spitting out the pits. As Tansy approaches on her horse, Bituminous, Hopkin looks up. Tansy: Hopkin. I had another dream about you this mornin'. Hopkin: Tansy Noeline Hartsell. The poetry of this moment- another pink ascension of that fiery orb we call the sun with you in its rosy glow atop your majestic yet gentle equine chariot- renders me speechless. Tansy: Arentcha gonna ask me about the dream? Hopkin: After you told me about the last one, I had nightmares for a week. Sweet girl, you are too eager to marry. You need to slow down and savor your life as a young, unfettered girl. I'm not the prince who is gonna kiss you awake. Tansy: I've been awake for a long time now, Hopkin. I've been dreaming of you since I was seven. You still love Sylvia, dontcha? Hopkin: Excuse me, Miss Hartsell. I have a fence to mend. [Hopkin stands and stretches and walks away.] |
