That Sunscreen Sheen

Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die:
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.

~Lewis Carroll

We've been having fun all summer long
(so says Brian Wilson)
Taking calls from irate AARP members
smelling that East Texas Gulf Coast stench
doing laundry at Mom and Joe's
buying new potatoes and plums and peaches
from the farmer's market in Bridge City
driving to the ocean
under much duress
watching "Spinal Tap"
for the dozenth time
ironing Hawaiian shirts
eating Goodart's Peanut Patties
drinking Sonic Coca-Cola
but don't be afraid of the world we made
on a hot summer night
(so says Billy Idol)
I'm glad I'm not Baby
I'm glad you're not Johnny
there will be no cheese
no badly written drama
no good-bye
it is more than understood that no one
puts me in the corner
turn off the phone and the machine
we don't need sunscreen for our
midnight full moonlight drive
come on baby, gonna take a little ride
down
down
by the ocean side
(so says Jim Morrison)
so many myths exploited
so many arrows slung
we aren't young and innocent and pure
anymore
but three nights and days me sail
the sea
me think of girl constantly
(so says Louie Louie)
lollipop, lollipop
everday it's gettin'further away
no more roller coasters
no more walkin' in the sand
take my hand and walk with me through
fields of fallen leaves
colored by bad chemicals
