We'd been out for dinner and shared a wonderful Italian meal, in keeping with the italian theme I washed mine down with 2 or 3 Galliano and cokes, he was (of course) drinking bourbon. Our conversation was deep, money, our future, our expectations, and an evaluation of our day, which we'd spent driving around suburbs of Melbourne considering where we might like to buy a house, we talked about schools, busy roads, railway stations, morning traffic and driving times. We were the last people to leave the restaurant, one waitress was cashing up the til, the other re-setting the tables for the next day, the bar tender was pouring them both a drink. We left, hand in hand, slightly subdue from our intense conversation. I'd noticed a 'Time Zone' on our way in, and with a gleam in my eye, I lead him into it, I got $10 worth of coins and handed them over, suggesting he put them in his pocket. We started with a game of his choice, a helicopter game which you had to dodge aircraft and shoot things, 'a classic' he said. Playing doubles it was soon obvious that he'd had some practice, and I was well out of my league. Next, it was my choice. Straight to the 'Adam's family' pinball machine, we didn't keep score this time, and played flipper each for a game. I looked up and caught him looking down at me smiling, I looked into his eyes and we both smiled, a ball was lost between the flippers and we laughed together. His turn to choose, and he knew exactly which game was next. 'Daytona', a racing car game in which you sit side by side and race each other on separate screens. I'd never played before and could only reach the accelerator peddle if I stretched my toes all the way out. After 10 or so laps, I lost it on a corner, I clipped the wall and rolled my car at 315kph - weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! Laughing, I soon got the hang of it, and my little red car caught up with his blue car, there was some dueling, pushing each other into the wall, and then off into the grass, there was laughing, and apparently I even squealed as my car over took his. (It is very unlike me to squeal!) The finish line approached, I was in front and it was in my sights, and then..... his car came up the inside and over took me, he beat me right on the finish line. Laughing we kissed and compared lap times, he may have won the race but my lap time was fastest, there was more laughter as we headed out into the night and to the car. Kids again, for those moments. What freedom. |
