Post Dream Dialogue

wife: I dreamed about him this morning.
husband: So that explains the attitude you gave me when I tried to wake you up.
wife: He was telling me the reasons why it would never work between us. He has a career, I don't. He lives in another state. He enjoys anal sex. So we made love the regular way and then went our separate ways.
husband: What do you think it means?
wife: It doesn't mean anything. Dreams don't mean anything.
husband: That contradicts everything you've told me about dreams. You're Cherokee. Dreams are sacred.
wife: I'm not Cherokee. I'm a quarter Cherokee, diluted with Ireland and Scotland and Germany and France and Switzerland. Dreams are just the sub strata of the subconscious. Or something.
husband: But you've had a lot of dreams about him.
wife: I've never even met the guy. I've never even heard his voice on the phone. He's just...a symbol.
husband: But what does he represent?
wife: Longing.
husband: Longing for what?
wife: I don't know. He's...someone I'd like to drink beer with.
husband: I can't believe you can say that after the way he treated you. He's slime.
wife: He was always honest. I admire honesty.
husband: No he wasn't. He was slime. I should've known you wouldn't break the pattern.
wife: What pattern?
husband: All the women I've ever known always want the one who treats them like shit. I should've played hard to get.
wife: I wouldn't have respected you for that. I was tired of all the games.
husband: You keep dreaming of him. He means something to you.
wife: I don't think so. Maybe he represents the only love I was ever familiar with before you...unrequited love. He represents longing. Nothing more.
husband: You're lying. But that's fine. I still dream of Michelle sometimes.
wife: In an ideal world you'd be with Michelle.
husband: And you'd be with him.
