Scenes 31 thru 32

SCENE 31

INT.- Topless bar- Night.

Mr. Cummings is sitting at his usual table near the stage. Now that Frances/Mandee is gone, he has latched onto Roxi/Magenta. Magenta is wearing a short black velvet dress and a strand of fake pearls. Mr. Cummings is drinking Wild Turkey on the rocks. Magenta is drinking champagne.

Mr. Cummings: Are you sure the boyfriend will be gone for at least a week?
Magenta: I have it on good authority.
Mr. Cummings: I called her last night. She didn't sound too happy to hear from me. She hung up on me, as a matter of fact.
Magenta: Well, that was rude. I wouldn't hang up on you.
Mr. Cummings: I miss her so much, Magenta. I was hoping maybe she was missing me, too.
Magenta: She's crazy not to miss you, Mr. Cummings. I'd miss you.
Mr. Cummings: Really?
Magenta: Oh, yeah. I'm glad that bitch is gone. Now I have you all to myself.

"Passion" by Rod Stewart begins to play. Magenta squeals and quickly drains her champagne.

Magenta: This is my theme song. Wanna see how much it moves me?
Mr. Cummings: Yes.

Magenta slowly rises to her feet. Gives Mr. Cummings a seductive table dance. Lays it on really thick. Makes lots of smoldering eye contact. Mr. Cummings sighs and briefly closes his eyes. Opens his eyes and imagines he's seeing Frances/Mandee in Magenta's place.

SCENE 32

EXT.- Luke and Marie's apartment complex- Night.

Luke is walking down the sidewalk toward his apartment. He looks up at Marie's window. Stops walking and stares in disbelief. There are burning candles on the window sill. The blinds are pulled halfway up. Marie is standing nude at the window, looking up at the starry sky.

Luke: Damn.

Luke bounds up the stairs and bangs on Marie's door. Marie opens the door wearing a black silk robe. Navajo chanting and drums pound from the stereo in the den.

Marie: Don't you ever bang on my door like that again. I was in a very deep place just now and you fucking ruined it.
Luke: You were standing at your window naked. Anyone could see you.
Marie: So?
Luke: You don't care if anyone sees you? What if a kid walked by? Or a pervert? Or a rapist or crack fiend or Christian?
Marie: That's an interesting list. You know, I wasn't thinking of the impact my nudity would have on anyone walking by. I was meditating. I meditate in the nude. I just felt like looking at the stars, all of a sudden. I shouldn't have to explain this to you. It's not your business.
Luke: I saw you from the sidewalk. Damn, I think you're goin' crazy or somethin'.
Marie: Yeah, probably. Thanks for takin' care of Frances, by the way. She says you helped her pick out a gun and are gonna teach her how to shoot it. That's really nice of you.
She's beautiful, isn't she?
Luke: Are you hopin' we'll hook up?
Marie: Sure. The guy she's with is no good. She needs your decency.
Luke: You really are crazy. I mean- you've lost it.
Marie: I never had it. Goodbye, Luke.

Marie closes the door. Luke shakes his head.
