Beyond the Barbed Wire

back then
when we were pure
and the road was
dirt
across from us
there was barbed wire
and beyond the barbed wire
high grass
you could hide in
if not for the
chiggers
and the night was deep dark
but in the backyard
you could see the twinkling lights
of Decatur
as you sat in the wooden swing
and smiled
at the stars
and we never
locked the door
at night
and you drove an old truck
and I would ride beside you
barefoot and dusty
my head on your shoulder
with Hank Williams or Merle Haggard
on the radio

these days
we are surrounded
by new subdivisions
and the road is paved
and the night isn't deep dark
you drive a car
I forget what it's called
and people think I'm eccentric
'cause I walk
to town.
