she was born in the usual way to teenage parents in rural Texas and she was cute for two years and then she wasn't so she got whipped a lot and criticized for watching goofy cartoons and playing pretend with all the wrong boys in all the wrong closets and she was afraid to blossom so she didn't she loved a lot of boys who didn't love her back her poetry grew from the tear blotched unrequited love letters crumpled up in the floorboard of some guy's Mustang and she won a few tiaras that collected dust and her teachers loved her for being a good speller and an excellent reader and hated her for never turning her homework in on time and not understanding fractions and she tried to lose her virginity twice to two different Capricorn guys it took an Aries to finally break through she went crazy for a few did the whole hedonism thing to death while loving an Army guy who lied about being in the CIA and then one day fell in love for real with an Army officer in a disco and he broke her heart so she got a computer fell in love with a poet who made her laugh and cry with his wise wacky words she thought it was a milestone falling in love with a guy she'd never seen who could effect her with words alone but it wasn't if anything it was a gallstone she had a lot of gall to consider it anything more than cyber ego stroking and temporary empathy of the rural Jack Daniels at six a.m. kind but then a man came along who loved her back 'cause he loved her words, too and her photos didn't hurt but she remained mostly mangled rather than star spangled and she was a freak flag always whipping with a snap in any wandering wind. |
