(canada is america when she grows up)

are people really awake for the
toronto
rush hour?
on the subway i see them
seemingly asleep behind
their newspapers
too sedated
for much irony or wit
this early
in the morning
subways were made for
big eastern cities like
this
it seems
where there's the place
called home
and work
and who really cares
what's above ground
in between

and there
in the bad light
i have more than enough time
to think of our last weeks
together
in our poor desert paradise
peter tosh blaring out of
the garage
together at last
because there was just no
other way
(and everybody sang)
(let jah be praised)
sublime greek salads
from dion's
on the way
but sometimes i wonder
just what you'd say
if you could see
what i see
hear what i hear
smell the oil and hot dogs
cooking
up on the sidewalk
the sudden rush of wind
as the train pulls into a stop
taking people off to another
day
then as it
leaves
the dull
metallic thunder
i can still remember your face
well enough
to smile inside
and wonder
