some of us stood on the sidelines one dance too many watching with hot caramel syrup thick wistfulness as pretty petite blondes got felt up to Bon Jovi ballads some of us cried in dark frilly bedrooms with a big fat moon mocking us outside the window in a merciless West Texas sky not to be consoled by our ex-cheerleader mothers who thought they could purchase our golden teenage dreams for us at Dilliard's or Sally's Beauty Supply some of us wanted to lose our virginity at thirteen to the youth minister's mouthy hazel eyed son or the football player who sat with his legs spread wide in history class some of us had to wait until we were twenty-two only to lose it to a wild man met in a bar a man still in love with his ex-wife but willing to give us a try for two nights in a row only to ask us with no humor or irony over the phone if we had crabs some of us went stir crazy wanting to turn flings into marriages some of us found god in chat rooms some of us refused to be dumped some of us left Janis Joplin on his voice mail some of us wrote our way out of hell one adjective at a time some of us had a happy ending that took bad drama and bullshit and plenty of wine and running away before we could trust it enough to crawl back and lay down and finally sleep. |
