I picked up the phone
And the voice on the other end
Was yours for a moment
I could feel my whole body ease and smile
Laugh as I leaned into the sound
I knew it wasn't you when he laughed back
Yet I could feel my pulse quicken
My heart race
As I just kept pretending
Lapping each syllable
It was soothing to my mind and soul
Until the call ended
The bubble burst
Leaving me inwardly screaming
And reality slapped me cold
