I've always been the flake who couldn't make up her mind kept awake by the dreamy turmoil of Neptune flying off in all directions with the winged feet of Mercury looking for home in men and strange cities there's always Austin still no light rail but there's South by Southwest and Antone's and damn fine barbecue and there's San Antonio which appeals to my baser instincts all those shopping malls there's even a mall on the Riverwalk with a Dairy Queen in the food court and there's you my husband at home in Albuquerque leery of Texas and with good reason but sometimes you speak of San Francisco and Marin County if we're ever published we say we'll spend half the year in San Francisco the other half in Manhattan a city I've only seen twice as a tourist which doesn't seem right somehow a city you've never seen at all when I take you there at last I won't have any tolerance for the typical first timer tour no Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building or Times Square or the Met it will be straight to CBGB's and then the Village but none of this speaks to the core of me you are my home, of course I've tried to live without you and all the Excedrin P.M.s and Darvocets and cute waiters in the world couldn't help if you decide we're here to stay in this high desert casino kachina doll city then that's the word and I will live it with you still my dreams of the Pacific Northwest keep shaking me up maybe Alaska is too cold but there's Oregon and Washington all those forests glacial lakes lava caves all those silver mists as vague as I am it's all there inside my name silver mists silver rainwater winter mists winter rainwater no sun to speak of there is no desert inside my name for some reason I seem to find the most poetry in Corvallis. |
