Exhibit A

Take the rose bush in our back yard.

The former owners planted it,
and
I insist it doesn't belong in the desert and proceed to
praise our Texas agave and giant yucca and other plants
more thorny,
more prickly,
more at home
with thirst.

But when I'm not looking you water it.

And it blooms
in a flood of color -
red petals against brown earth
in the shade
of our picket fence.
