He'll never get to meet that little red-haired girl, now...Or maybe he will... Linus is all grown up.He folds delicately his security blanket to put it in the attic. He looks around. In a corner, theres a pile of photo albums. He opens one to see a picture of Charlie Brown sitting next to that li'l red-haired girl.It was,he recalls, their first date, one week after the prom. The expression in his face is a mixture of pain & bliss.Linus smiles at the awkwardness of his friend.Another picture shows Schroeder after his first piano recital at the Carnegie Hall.Next to him stands proud Lucy whos holding very tightly the somewhat annoyed musician. In the background, one can see "pigpen",looking very handsome & surprisingly clean, giving a kiss to Violet.Interestingly, there is a speck of dirt on the photograph, right over his face.A dog barks outside. Linus goes to the window and notices once again the most curious spectacle:The neighbor's dog,Snoopy, the old beagle, seems to be having a conversation with a few birds. Not barking at them, not chasing them away, but somehow communicating. The things you can learn from animals. He leaves the window & gets to the door.On his way,he spots some baseball equipment & his sister's football, still intact and barely used.In a corner,a few mangled kites salvaged from a tree in the park.A box of eggshells he intended to give his teacher miss Othmar,so many years ago...So many memories, he thinks. It almost feels like fifty years. He walks a few steps. Then he stops for a moment.Somehow, time seems to stand still...(or sometimes we all wish it really does). |
