Your Alarm Goes Off

"I'm the guy who left you with tears in his eyes."
-"Girl Don't Tell Me" (Brian Wilson)

Your alarm goes off
at 7:03 PM every single
day
and you can't reset it or turn it off
because it's one of those Armitrons
with the thousand useless
buttons.
So you listen to it every time and
then forget about it until tomorrow
when maybe you're stuck
in traffic
and running late for something you
don't
even want to go to -
or when you're someplace you shouldn't
be
and the person you shouldn't be with
props herself,
naked and unashamed,
against the
hotel pillows and lights another
cigarette,
asking,
"So does that mean your time's up?"
That would be enough,
but it goes off again the next
day
and the one after that
and then on the evening you're lying
on a different bed
with the woman you married -
talking,
apparently already
at the end of things,
remembering moments
from your beginning
that probably would have stayed
forgotten
like unfinished books of hand-copied
poetry
that you started
by the blue sea of Mexico
and continued into the snowy Canadian
spring
and never quite finished.
These moments
will be backlit
by a sinking sun
and the shadows of blowing leaves
against the dusty wooden blinds that
look
somehow like fire
or falling water.

These moments
will make you think of still other
moments -
first visits
to apartments you still needed
directions
to find,
and first meals there,
and knowing you were fed,
and,
later,
kissing under the overhang outside the
door
so no one would see
the thing you've both found
until you're good
and ready.
