For What It's Worth

you say
I say I'm sorry too much
but I swear
the words aren't meaningless
even if I say them so very often
and now
I can only choke and sound
like so much dust in the air, smoke
meaningless and weightless
a fire's ghost
a catch in my throat
words caught, trapped
rendering me mute

you say you know I would
never betray you
for what it's worth
but the doubt clogs your every thought
if it's been too long
since we last talked
the words have no weight
valueless as a handful
of dry leaves
faerie gold
fleeting, forgotten
dissipated as soon as
they are spoken

I don't mean to hurt you
I never meant to show you
how much you hurt me
for what it's worth
I try to keep you safe

you say you see my shield
coming up, guarding my heart
from the words' serrated edges and
your barbed points
you say it, but you don't lower the lance
impaled again on the
brutal judgement
the bleak mistrust
in your voice
in your eyes

for what it's worth
I am sorry
again
