Time Will Tell

The slow movement of the music brought smiles
To our mutually unfamiliar faces.
I whispered "Berlioz..." while you were sighing "Yes..."
And the side glance it brought betrayed our mutual glee.
'Le spectre de la rose' rarely disappoints.
It wasn't accidental (you now admit) that at intermission
We ended up at the same end of the lobby.
Our quick friendly chat danced its way,
From Les Nuits d'Ete,
To the irony of influencing Wagner,
To "What are you doing later?"

Talk of the show lasted 'til the others left.
I asked for 'your story', you asked 'who are you'.
The more we shared, the more we knew.
Tonight was as special as it was pure luck.
Neither of us had plans when we woke up this Saturday.
Each other's existence was undiscovered.
We playfully question how tonight was possible.
Is this how meaningful friendships start?

Way too soon to know if we're meant to be.
But our common loves tell us we should try.
The Romantic in me usually brings hope along for the ride.
But not so much lately, when serendipity owns such power.
Lying in bed, I seek reassurances from our time alone
I rub my drowsy eyes, and am surprised
By a lingering scent from when I touched your wrist
And 'The Ghost of the Rose' drifts me towards sleep.

'This fragile perfume is my soul,
And I've arrived here from paradise.'

("Yes... Berlioz...")
