HI Whit...

Yeah...that Tony.

It was simply surreal.
He and I spoke briefly the morning he had the heart attack...were supposed to go over some details on a promotion tour we were putting together for his book.

You know...I felt weird all that day. Went for a day trip with Desi to the zoo...but I just felt like I was going to jump out of my skin the whole time. Tony's dad had been in bad health---so when I got home, and a friend called to see if I was ok---I thought that was what it as about.

No. Tony died two hours before.
His mom asked me help with his eulogy.
I flew to Atlanta---drove to almost Savanah...and helped bury one of my dearest friends.

I miss him more than I can say...and I miss his words even more...

Congrats to all the Front Pagers -- good to see a few new names there :)

Sheila -- Keys -- thanks for this, something that I've struggled to put into words many times but never managed quite so clearly...

Gala -- You have shaped something beautiful out of the love, loss and sorrow that come through in every line of honors rendered...For Tony. Such an elegy seems an entirely fitting way to honor a poet and beloved friend...

Thanks echo---and there is a typo, of course...sigh.

Tony Spivey was an amazing man.
I never understood military funerals...til his.
And there is a part of me that still does not accept him being gone.

I was lucky. I met him five weeks before this happened in Fayetteville NC. He was the keynote poet for a teacher's convention. I teased his publisher about making bail for both of us...and we spent 36 hours together, not quite raising enough hell to be arrested.

To know him was to love him...and he was one of the funniest people I ever met.

SO thanks...from me...and Tony.

Comments such as wide white butt bring on fond memories
Of skiing in snow white Alps
Ringing with shouted bliss
Liz~ You are too sweet. I just read "nubble" and it was fantastic. Made my heart stop... if you're talking about the light house that I think you are. You know my favorite place on earth. I feel like my soul lives over there by the nubble... *big sigh* of course I am married to a die hard oregonian. ~Vi

Violet: the lighthouse in Maine...at York Beach.... I love the place....I spend hours sitting on the rocks there, even in the winter when its way too cold to do it....you'll have to convince the husband to at least take you for a visit. I think that once the New England coast is in your blood, its there for good.
